Theme Analysis

Do you know anyone who has had to  sacrifice their own life to save others? That is what happened in the “”Cold Equations.”” In “”The Cold Equations””, a girl has snuck onto a EDS ship going to another planet, because her brother lives on that planet. She thinks she has to just pay a fine, but her added weight means that they don’t have enough fuel. So there is no choice but to eject her into space, or eject the crew. Satire, irony, character, and setting In the “”Cold Equations”” shows that  sometimes in life someone else’s life has to be sacrificed for the good of others.

Indeed, people do have to sacrifice themselves for others, it is shown in this story through irony. See, this girl thought that all you had to do was pay a fine. But what she really had to do was be ejected so that the rest of the crew could survive. “This cruiser must maintain its schedule. The lives of not one but many depend on it. I know how you feel but you’ll have to go through with it.” Godwin 4. That is what the ship’s commander said. There was no other choice but to eject the girl. Irony showed us, throughout this story,  that in life , Sometimes people have to be sacrificed for the good of others. Yes , the people that sacrificed themselves are truly heroes. It is shown here through character.

In  life, people have to be sacrificed for others,  and it is shown through quotes. The girl asks the pilot “What did he mean?” she said. “He meant it the way it sounded.” Godwin 5. He said. These characters talk about what the commander said must be done. There was absolutely no choice but to eject her . The characters really helped us understand that sometimes we have to make sacrifices for others.

The thesis is also proved through satire, As we see in this quote that the girl says. “You’re gonna do it? You’re really gonna do it? I didn’t do anything and now I’m gonna die for it!” Godwin 5. There really was no choice for her. Even if she didn’t do anything bad. She still had to be ejected. We have to make sacrifices for others in life.

The thesis is also shown through what is directly stated in the story.¨The lives of not one but many depend on this voyage¨ the commander said.  In life, you have to weigh your options and make hard decisions. The hard decision was that she had to be sacrificed for others. The directly stated quotes in the story helps understand that.

In the Cold Equations, it shows that sometimes in life someone else’s life has to be sacrificed for the good of others. First, it is shown through irony. The girl thought that she would just have to pay a simple fine, but what she really had to do was be ejected. Secondly, It is shown through character. The commander meant it the way it sounded. The girl had to be ejected. Lastly, it is proved through the directly stated things in the story. The Girl’s life would have to be sacrificed for others.
